Portrait of the Artist Wallpaper no.2
2007 Colour inkjet print 300 x 300 cm

A wallpaper sized print taken from a picture of a work of 1992 (Portrait of the Artist) that was subsequently altered ('improved') by children and re-photographed and printed by the artist. During the exhibition Vertaalde Werken/Translated Works at Museum de Paviljoens, the artist challenged a group of children on a guided tour to improve the portraits, leading to a new work based on the piece from 1992.

Since 1992, when the original piece ‘Portrait of the Artist’, consisting of eighteen drawings by street artists, has been acquired by the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the museum has changed the exhibition conditions.

When first shown at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in 1992, the drawings were mounted with push pins on board, but the museum (the owner) does not allow the drawings to be exhibited outside of glass frames and in natural light, for their conservation. For the exhibition Vertaalde Werken Translated Works, 1990-2006 the piece was re-photographed on-site and printed as a b/w wallpaper at 1:1 scale, to avoid showing the real work in the conditions set by Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
