A hybrid feature documentary about the controversy surrounding Fountain (1917), "the most influential artwork of the 20th century".
Was it marketing, mystification or misogyny which caused the rise of the artwork Fountain?
It all started out as a lost piece of anti-art by an anonymous creator, eventually becoming the most influential artwork of the 20th century. Speculations about its origins have increased in parallel with the value of the numerous copies circulating the artworld. Can the discovery of a single letter change all that, into an attribution to a highly modern woman? In Alreadymade, originality, authorship and identity are challenged, just as Fountain did a century ago, only this time by using today's tools.
Voices attributing the work to Elsa von Freytag–Loringhoven, also known as The Baroness, are drawing increased attention, as there are historical wrongs to set right with female contributions in art generally.
A letter, found in 1982, in which Duchamp mentions a female friend sending in the piece for the Independent Artists exhibit in New York, resurfaces every now and then, firing up the debate between scholars. And although the attribution to our baroness may be wishful thinking, the rumor has brought Elsa von Freytag back into the light.
The film is an alternative whodunnit, in which everyone - artists, art historians and ultimately I myself - turns out to be a puppet in the powerplay of the art market.
